Active Birth
Empowering midwives to empower women. One of the greatest pleasures for midwives is being able
to assist a woman through a normal, physiological birth.
The slice of life?
Living through Caesarean
With the rate of Caesarean birth constantly rising, the impact of surgical birth on women (and midwives) requires reflection and action. This workshop will use the outcomes of Caesarean birth reported in an important research project as a basis for exploration of strategies to improve Caesarean birth experiences, evaluate current practice and develop practical approaches to better educate and prepare women.
Rising to the challenge:
Occipito-posterior labours and VBAC
This workshop will focus on two labour and birth scenarios that present challenges to both mothers and midwives. When babies present in the occipito-posterior position, labour is usually longer, more painful and tiring, with women frequently opting forr epidurals as a "way out". This kind of labour, whilst hard and difficult for women, has its own rewards and enabling a mother to achieve a natural birth in this curcumstance requires patience, insight and skills from the midwives at her side. This is not a complicated labour, just a variation, and one that can be viewed as a unique opportunity to realise one's full potentials, both for the labouring woman and the midwife assisting her.
The hormonal physiology of normal birth
Women's bodies give birth in miraculous ways. The process is driven by an intricate system of hormonal checks and balances, all designed to promote the best possible outcome for mother and baby. As our knowledge of these hormonal patterns evolve and research reveals more of its secrets and complexities, our insight into what is important for promoting normal birth expands.
When midwives are equipped with this detailed knowledge, their role is enhanced and their skills in enabling normal patterns of labour to develop and function are improved. Childbirth educators have a role in conveying the excitement and wonder of natural labour and birth and explaining the importance of pain in managing labour and for future bonding with the baby and increasing maternal satisfaction and sense of achievement
The hour after birth:
the foundation for life
The events of labour are a prelude to the important hour following birth, when mother and baby meet and connect for the first time. The hormonal environment created by the birth process is central to the bonding process, which forms the basic foundation of the mother/child relationship.
Creating calmness for birth
This half-day seminar will explore the use of calmbirth™ techniques in pregnancy programs and during labour and birth. It will be of interest to midwives, childbirth educators and doulas.
Motivating partners
This is a half-day seminar designed to meet the needs of midwives, childbirth educators and doulas. Empty arms: Making a Difference
when a baby dies
When a baby dies, during pregnancy, labour or birth, it is usually the midwife who is the first to provide comfort and assistance to the grieving parents. Being on the spot, dealing with raw emotions, struggling with one’s own feelings and trying to provide professional care can be hard, and very stressful.
